Observational Study of Dewahub Game Online in Indonesia: Gameplay, Social Dynamics, and Player Behavior

Abstract: This observational study examines the online gaming environment of Dewahub, a popular mobile game in Indonesia. Through non-participant observation, we investigated gameplay mechanics, social interactions, and player behavior within the game. The study aims to understand the game's appeal, its social impact, and the typical player experience in the Indonesian context.

Introduction: Mobile gaming has exploded in popularity in Indonesia, with a significant portion of the population actively participating in online games. Dewahub, a game characterized by its gacha mechanics, strategic gameplay, and social features, has garnered a substantial player base. This study seeks to explore the nuances of the Dewahub gaming experience, focusing on how players interact with the game and each other.

Methodology: The research employed a non-participant observational approach. Over a period of two weeks, the researcher observed various aspects of Dewahub gameplay, including public chat channels, in-game events, and player interactions within the game's social features (e.g., guilds, friend lists). Data collection involved detailed field notes, screenshots, and video recordings of gameplay sessions. The researcher focused on documenting gameplay strategies, communication patterns, social dynamics, and player emotional responses. Ethical considerations were addressed by observing publicly accessible game features and avoiding direct interaction with players to maintain anonymity.

Findings:

Gameplay Mechanics and Player Strategies: Dewahub's core gameplay revolves around collecting and upgrading characters (heroes) through a gacha system. Observations revealed a strong emphasis on resource management, team composition, and strategic decision-making during battles. Players were observed employing various strategies, including optimizing hero combinations, utilizing specific equipment, and adapting to different in-game events. The gacha system, while a source of frustration for some, also fueled player engagement, driving them to spend time and resources to acquire desired characters. The game’s frequent in-game events and challenges kept players motivated and provided opportunities for rewards and social competition.

Social Dynamics and Communication: The game fosters a strong sense of community through guilds and friend lists. Observations showed active communication within guilds, with players sharing strategies, coordinating events, and offering support. The chat function was frequently used for both strategic discussions and casual conversations. The language used was predominantly Indonesian, often incorporating slang and informal expressions. The research also noted the presence of both positive and negative social interactions. While many players were supportive and helpful, instances of toxicity, such as verbal abuse and harassment, were also observed, particularly in public chat channels. The competitive nature of the game, especially in ranked modes, often contributed to these negative interactions.

Player Behavior and Engagement: Player behavior varied significantly depending on their level of investment and in-game goals. Casual players were observed focusing on completing daily quests and enjoying the game’s narrative, while more dedicated players were actively involved in competitive modes, guild activities, and resource optimization. The study also noted the influence of in-game purchases on player behavior. Players who spent money on the game often had access to more powerful characters and equipment, which could lead to a perceived advantage and potentially influence the social dynamics within the game. The research also observed the impact of time commitment on player behavior. Players who invested a significant amount of time in the game were more likely to be highly engaged in the social aspects and competitive elements.

Discussion: This observational study provides insights into the Dewahub gaming experience in Indonesia. The game’s appeal lies in its strategic gameplay, social features, and the allure of the gacha system. The study highlights the importance of community and social interaction within the game, with guilds playing a crucial role in player engagement. However, the research also reveals the potential for negative social interactions and the influence of in-game purchases on player behavior. The findings suggest that Dewahub, like many online games, can be both a source of entertainment and a potential site for social challenges.

Conclusion: Dewahub offers a complex and multifaceted gaming experience for Indonesian players. The game's success is a testament to its engaging gameplay, strong social features, and effective monetization strategies. Further research, including surveys and interviews, could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the player experience, including the motivations behind in-game purchases, the impact of the game on players' well-being, and the strategies used to mitigate negative social interactions. Understanding these aspects is crucial for game developers and policymakers in navigating the evolving landscape of online gaming in Indonesia.
